AT&T, Comcast, Sprint Nextel, RCN Internet & Cable Services: Stop Charging Customers Fees for Bill Payment
The Issue
As Molly, the creator of the recent Verizon Wireless petition said, "Turns out people like you and me are getting more powerful by the day!" With our power in numbers, we pressured Verizon to back down from their proposed money-grabbing practice that would charge their customers a bill-payment service fee for an automated online service. Their blatant greediness caused a huge uproar from consumers, including a petition created on Change.org with over 130,000 signatures. In response to the outrage, the corporation ditched their $2 fee for paying bills online.
With this momentum we've built, we can gain control back from other greedy big businesses.
The Verizon Wireless incident served to highlight fee practices elsewhere in the communications industry. Other companies have been getting away with this greedy behavior for a long time. Rivals AT&T Inc and Sprint Nextel fees are even higher than Verizon's proposed levy at $5 per transaction. Comcast's payment fee, which is only levied in some states, is $5.99.
Additionally, AT&T and Comcast Corp say that they charge some customers who look for personal assistance in paying their bills but that they do not charge for online payments. Sprint said it charges customers with bad credit if they refuse to enroll for auto pay.
"The era of corporations walking roughshod over consumers without consequence is officially over," Ben Rattray, chief executive of Change.org, said in a statement. We must use our voices as consumers and stand up against corporate greed!
