On June 12, 2020, the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico Senate passed Resolution 1F.

The resolution recognized the heinous murder of George Floyd on May 25 at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, and twelve other people of color “lost at the hands of an inherently flawed and racist police institution” in the U.S.

The resolution also denounced the UNM administration's ambivalence towards protecting students of color, recognized numerous calls from the UNM community to end the violent harassment of peaceful protests by UNM, state and local police, and declared ASUNM’s support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

ASUNM Senator Suha Musa said of Resolution 1F, “There isn’t any middle ground in determining whether or not Black people deserve to exist in this country.” This message of solidarity against racism and police violence was a crucial statement in a time of national activism.

However, on July 3, ASUNM President Mia Amin vetoed Resolution 1F.

In rejecting the resolution’s plea against systematic violence, President Amin politicized the human rights of fellow students by declaring ASUNM to be a “a non-partisan organization” that is best served by “staying neutral.”

Systematic racism and police violence are not partisan questions, but an assault against the rights and freedoms due to every person in the U.S. Denouncing these crimes is only controversial, is only political, if the belief in the fundamental humanity of people of color is considered optional.

To stay neutral during injustice is to side with the oppressor. In vetoing this basic denouncement of the widespread brutality against people of color, President Amin has not used her office to stay out of the fray, but to become an institution of racism itself.

Therefore, we the students of the University of New Mexico have lost confidence in President Mia Amin, and demand she resign.
