Pharmaceutical companies should be in the business of saving lives, not killing them.
Recently, Missouri announced it would be using, Propofol (marketed by AstraZeneca as Diprivan), a drug produced by pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, to carry out its executions. Missouri would be the first state to use this untested method for lethal injections.
AstraZeneca should join other pharmaceutical companies like Hospira and Lundbeck in sending a clear message that its drugs should not be used to death penalty executions. Drug companies should be in the business of saving lives, not killing them. AstraZeneca should make sure that it restricts the distribution of Propofol to medical providers, hospitals, and pharmacies that pledge the drug will not be redistributed to prisons carrying out executions.
AstraZeneca claims that human rights is one its top priorities. It should affirm its values by taking a clear stand against the use of propofol in executions.
