Laurie Farber started this petition to Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and

We, the undersigned residents and library patrons of Wyandanch, do NOT support the Wyandanch Public Library’s effort to re-charter as a legislative district library for one or more of the following reasons:

+ The library should focus first on re-opening.

+ A district library will have less options for funding/bonding.

+ As a district library, they would not get TANS (Tax Anticipation Notes—a loan) from the school district and the Town of Babylon has said they would not provide this.

+ Pulling away from the school district may lead to LESS transparency since they currently are refusing to give financial data to the school district and state monitor.

+ The above point about financial data is the main reason the library is trying to do this.

+ Our state legislators have said they would not introduce the required resolutions without wide-spread community support, yet the library continues to spend money to try to make this happen.

+ No library on Long Island has ever re-chartered as a different type of library.

+ There are still too many unknowns including the financial stability of this move, what happens to the site which belongs to the school district, and whether they will actually increase transparency.
