For close to 50 years, Guwahati’s most iconic evocative modernist sculpture was Ram Kinkar Baij’s Gandhi at the Gandhi Mandap on the Sarania Hills. That is about to be lost after the Assam’s government’s decision to dismantle what they feel is a ‘distorted’ image of Mahatma Gandhi.

Ram Kinkar Baij or Kinkarda as he was popularly known in Santiniketan is India’s best-known “creative sculptor” who remained on the fringes of the art market but had his own distinctive inimitable idiom of emotion and experimentation.

Over the years the government neglected the work of art and abused it by painting on it.

While there is outrage in the artist community in Assam against this decision, we need to rally around the anger to raise awareness about the importance of this piece of art and demand urgent restoration of the same.
