Plastic pollution is choking the life from our ocean. It is clear that our consumption of these unnecessary single-use plastic items is causing irreparable damage to the environment. These items kill and harm marine life, pose a significant health risk from the consumption of microplastics, foul our beaches, and clog our storm drains resulting in increased flooding.
According to Clean Ocean Action's 2018 Annual Beach Sweep Report, volunteers picked up 454,365 items of trash from New Jersey beaches, of which 81.77% was plastic. This included:
- 21,527 Single-Use Plastic Bags
- 31,156 Single-Use Plastic Straws
- 5,569 Single-Use Foam Food Products
- 24,127 Single-Use Foam Pieces
Importantly, these numbers are just what volunteers were able to collect in two short three-hour-sessions. The true number is much higher. Our single-use plastic consumption has come at a great cost to New Jersey's natural environment. We must, and can do better. The time for action is now!
I urge you ensure that you do everything in your power to make sure that the pending Single-use Plastic Reduction Legislation (S.2776 & A.4330) is passed before the end of the current legislative session on January 14, 2020. The law targets single-use plastic straws, shopping bags, and Styrofoam food containers. This is a huge opportunity for New Jersey to show its leadership in the fight against plastic pollution.
