In Brief - Your signature will send a signal to Palo Alto restaurant owners that customers want to know what types of containers their takeout food will be packed in. We will not burden restaurants with extra expense or force them to change the containers they use. This is purely an effort to get more information for customers.

When you consider ordering food from a restaurant, you learn about it on the menu. The menu shows what is in it, if it is vegetarian, spicy, gluten-free, etc. However, the menu does not tell what kind of takeout container it will come home in.

Sign this petition if:

  • You realize that there is no market for recyclable plastics at this time and that they end up either in landfills, a sea creature's belly, or your drawers at home (in ever-increasing numbers).
  • You would rather not support the petroleum industry any more than you do already.
  • You are excited about Palo Alto's Zero Waste Ordinance and do not want to slip back into the dark times of un-requested plastic utensils and the like.

We love our Palo Alto restaurants. We want the delicious food you make. You have reasons for choosing the takeout containers you buy, and we are not asking you to change them. We are asking for information about those containers before we order.

If this petition is successful, Takeout:PaloAlto (a project of EngageOn.org) will work with interested restaurants to offer takeout container information to customers without requiring the reprinting of menus or substantive changes to restaurants' online menus, websites, or ordering apps. We do not want to burden restaurants with any extra expenditures in these extra difficult times.

Thank you for your attention.
