I still recall waking up to my 5-year-old son wheezing and struggling to breathe.
My name is Genieve Long. I’ve lived in Mayflower, Arkansas for 28 years. In March 2013 an oil pipeline that ran right through the middle of Mayflower broke. The pipeline spilled 210,000 gallons of raw crude oil. The oil was knee deep and ran past our school and the senior center. It was so thick you could see the chunks of tar sands, and it smelled awful.
My friends and family are sick from the oil spill. We are suffering from headaches, nausea, asthma, bronchitis and coughing -- that just won’t go away. The cancer causing chemical, benzene, has contaminated our air. Our water has been polluted with highly toxic substances.
The oil spill has ruined our small town.
We need your help to make sure what happened in Mayflower does not happen to any more communities.
Let President Obama know how much damage pipelines like Keystone XL Pipeline can have on our towns, our health, and our future.
Thousands of American communities like Mayflower are along the proposed route of the Keystone XL Pipeline.
Oil executives have sworn that this pipeline is safe. I’m here to tell you not to trust them.
The only people who want Keystone to happen are rich foreign oil executives, who would make billions at our expense.
The Canadian province of British Columbia recently rejected an alternative route for the Keystone XL Pipeline. In a 99-page report government officials questioned the oil company’s safety claims, saying it was not clear that it “will in fact be able to respond effectively to spills either from the pipeline itself or from tankers” and added, “‘Trust me’ is not good enough in this case.”
It’s up to us to make sure that President Obama sees all this – and that he does the right thing by stopping Keystone XL from moving forward.
