Ask Kent County Councillor Sue Chandler to reject the closure of Wayfarers care home.

Wayfarers Care Home is a 33 bed facility for older residents of Sandwich and the surrounding villages. It was built in 1983 and is one of the last few remaining local authority homes for the elderly in Kent. It is the only one in Sandwich.

In 2016, after a public consultation, the decision was taken to sell the home as a going concern. This didn't work out, so in May this year a new consultation was put in place.  It gave five different options but the council's proposal was to close the home and sell the land. The consultation closed on the 24th July and the Adult Social Care Committee (of which, Councillor Sue Chandler is a member) will make their decision in early October.

If the home closes the residents will have to move to a home out of the area which will cause them anxiety and stress and may make it more difficult for families and  carers to visit them. It will also mean that future care home residents, in a town where approximately one third of the population are pensioners, will be forced to move out.

Wayfarers was rated 'Good' in a report from the Care Quality Commission and when I visited recently I found a pleasant, well looked after home. The staff I met seemed kind and caring.

I have set up this petition to ask Kent County Councillor for Sandwich, Sue Chandler, to reject the closure of Wayfarers Care Home.
