What is the situation?
The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria has exacerbated an already fragile state of affairs in Puerto Rico due to the decade-long recession and debt crisis. The catastrophic winds knocked out the entire telecommunications system and electrical grid - leaving many desperate, but unable to communicate with their loved ones and know if they are safe. The majority of homes do not have access to drinking water and 1,200 people now have the stars as their roof. The public transportation and postal service systems are down and the airport is only working at 20% capacity. And all this is just a brief summary of the current situation. The sad reality is the island is destroyed and not the same it was a month ago. Nevertheless, we will stand up, but we need your help!
The federal government is not doing enough!
After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, President Trump acted decisively and swiftly and asked Congress for $8 billion in extra relief within six days. The President is scheduled to visit Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 2nd, two weeks after the disaster and he has yet to mention any sort of aid package. There are people suffering without food, water, or medicine. And many could die if they are not rescued and given medicine or basic necessities immediately. These people in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens and they deserve the same swift and decisive action taken to help Texas and Florida.
