Ask Boris Johnson to back struggling families

The UK Government are about to implement the biggest cut to social security payments to families in Cheshire West and across the country since the second world war. Families will lose £20 per week, £90 per month and over £1,000 every year from the end of September 2021.
The Labour Party is the party of fairness. We believe hardworking families in Britain should be able to afford a home, food to eat and energy to power their heating and devices.
For some people, at certain times in their lives, a top-up from the Government helps to ensure they can afford to pay for basic things. The cut is unnecessary and will have a devastating impact on families. The uplift isn't a luxury, it's made a difference to hardworking families and helped them to cope with a pandemic that is far from over.
The Government will tell you the uplift was only an emergency measure, but the reality is that Universal Credit payments don't go far enough. This cut is a choice, after all, the Government is still able to find the money for vanity projects including a yacht costing more than £250m.
Combined with more Government choices to end the furlough scheme, abandon their commitment to the pension triple lock and allow evictions the cut to Universal Credit could not come at a more challenging time. Working families are understandably worried and many more have been kept in the dark about the deliberate action the Government will take and how many MPs support it.
As we saw last summer, when it mattered, the Government abandoned hungry schoolchildren by refusing to extend free school meals. It's looking like it'll be more of the same unless we act.
Boris Johnson plans to cut a lifeline to those that currently need it and Cheshire West Labour is calling on the Prime Minister to back struggling families and cancel the cut to Universal Credit.
