Lately, the Asian American community has received a lot of hatred and hostility. In fact, COVID-19 has been repeatedly and wrongfully labeled as the “Chinese Virus” over the past year; what ensued was numerous anti-Asian violent incidents that stemmed from this misleading labeling. According to USA Today, as many as 6,600 hate incidents targeting Asian Americans have been reported since the pandemic began. But mistreatments toward the Asian American community have not subsided even as the pandemic is seeing some improvements: in the first quarter of 2021, the frequency of anti-Asian hate crime reports have surged up 164% compared to the previous year. The anti-Asian shooting that happened this March killed 6 Asian women and injured another 2. Another violence incident left a 65-year-old Asian woman hospitalized with serious injuries, after she was kicked, stomped, and left on the ground. Another hate crime attacked left a man unconscious on the subway in Brooklyn. These are horrible things to hear, and yet they were merely a trivial portion of anti-Asian hate incidents that are spreading across our nation. As an Asian American, this is both shocking and heartbreaking. Asian Americans deserved to be treated equally and respectfully. Here, I call for an end to anti-Asian hatred and violence, and I hope to see more standing by me in such an effort.
