Ashford Borough Council has announced that they will be demolishing Bockhanger Community Centre before the end of the year, with the area replaced with turf or hardstanding until plans for the area are decided. It will cost Ashford Borough Council (ABC) £150,000 to demolish the site, which is home to Bockhanger library and is said to be in a state of disrepair.
The hall, located in a shopping precinct off Bybrook Road in Kennington, is more than 50 years old and requires maintenance to ensure that this important part of the community can remain in use.
Over the years, the hall has been used by the Bockhanger Monkeys nursery and the local community for birthday and wedding celebration parties, wakes, a regular number of dance and sports groups and as a polling station. In recent years the main use of the community centre has been to house a KCC library, the nursery and three sports clubs hiring the space in the evenings.
Since the hall was closed in March, the nursery has now had to relocate to the ground of The Phoenix Community Primary School and the sports clubs have had to find alternative venues. The library is due to be closed by November and replaced with a mobile service, which will be available for just 30 minutes a fortnight, with a high possibly of this being during the working hours of most residents.
The centre has been at the heart of the community for a long time and is a place for local people to come together and enjoy. The library is very popular and is used by many residents on the four days it is open each week, including children who often visit with parents to select books after school or on Saturday mornings.
It is also a concern that the demolition of the Community Centre and library will have an impact on the trade in the parade of shops adjacent to the building.
