This petition was created based on the proposed 22-unit apartment complex at 23 Elizabeth Place, in the Montford Historic District. We the undersigned urge you to exercise the highest duty of care in adjudicating on the proposal to build a 19,700 square foot apartment complex in the Montford Historic District.  As citizens across Asheville and Buncombe County, we greatly value the largest historic district in this metropolitan area. Worthy of your best preservation and protection efforts, Montford supports economic development, serves the area’s tourism and enriches the quality of our lives.

The barest minimum of protecting and preserving Montford demands that you deny a project that brings towering retaining walls (19 feet at the highest point), a 28-foot grade change, and a complex of buildings that dwarfs its neighbors. If you permit destruction of the scale and environment of Elizabeth Place, by establishing precedent, you are putting at grave risk other streets in Montford and all other historic districts.

During this time of rapid growth and development, use your power to protect and preserve the areas long designated by local, state, and national authorities to be important collections of cultural and architectural resources.
