On March 2019, Delhi was ranked the world's most polluted capital. Despite a few concerted efforts of the government to control the same, the deadly effects of pollution continues to affect the health of it's citizens. According to a study in 2018, air pollution in Delhi is responsible for approximately 10,000 to 30,000 annual deaths in the city ( https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/delhi-loses-80-lives-to-air-pollution-every-day-says-study-50222 ) Every year, during Diwali time, Delhi's pollution levels reach an all time high and the sky is smog ridden. For citizens like me who have sinus or similar breathing problems, the pollution is an additional health hazard.

The responsibility to keep the levels in check lies in the hands of the people as much as the government. In some regions, citizens have shifted to a Green Diwali by celebrating a cracker-free festival. However, in a country which houses the poorest of the poor, people's economic interests tend to take over their concerns for the environment. This was observed in the case of Punjab, Haryana and UP, where the marginal farmers recklessly indulged in crop burning which has been the major source of air pollution in Delhi (25-30%).

I urge the state to take a bigger step in this direction. Citing the example of Beijing where in 2016, a 23 foot tall tower was constructed which could purify 1 million cubic feet of air per hour ( https://youtu.be/3DoRfQBV5Ek ). This has been a tremendous effort as it has resulted in purifying the air by almost 55%. The tower produces jewelry out of this air which helps in reinvesting the revenue generated towards its maintenance or repairs.

Since this is a global issue, I would request all to join hands with Delhi and help us reduce pollution for a better future.
