Delhi is facing a serious problem of pollution and solid waste management. As polythene is a non biodegradable material they have serious hazards in air , water pollution. Plastic and polythene bags are one of the measure source of pollution in Delhi. There are many drawbacks of using polethene / plastics:-

1.When plastics are burned, they produce toxic gases and smoke
2. Most plastic wastes littering the roadsides cause disease causing microorganisms.
3. Plastics dumped in water bodies pose a threat to aquatic life.
4. The toxic substances present in plastics which are dumped in water bodies can cause reproductive failure in aquatic organisms.
5. Plastics prevent the rainwater from seeping into the ground.
6.Dumping of plastics in the ground affects the plants growing in the area as they dont get enough water from the soil.

Plastic and polythene bags are banned in Himachal Pradesh since 2009 and it has been a successful experiment which made Himachal much more cleaner and reduced the plastic pollutents. Recently two more states UP and Maharashtra are going on the same path. Delhi being the capital of India should definitely ban this ill practice of polethene/plastic bag . Despite a ban on polythene bag use in 2015 in delhi there is no effective implementation. Delhi need some serious punishment and fine imposition for effective implementation.
