Since 1st April 2017, the State Bank of India has hiked the monthly Minimum Account Balance for Metro areas from ₹500 to ₹5000. The bank is deducting amounts ranging from ₹25+Services Charges to ₹100+Service Charges in the name of Monthly Account Non-Maintenance Charges.
I am a student and I depend on the scholarship for my living expenses, which is provided lump sum at the end of the semester. Therefore it's not always possible to maintain the minimum Monthly Account Balance.
This hike in Charges hits hard not only the students but also the majority of the bank customers not having a monthly source of income, such as daily wage-laborers and the contractual workers.
It is indeed an irony, as the Government of the day is claiming to promote the financial inclusion through 'Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana', the largest Bank of the country, claiming to be the "Banker to every Indian", is siphoning off the hard-earned money of the Economically disadvantaged sections of India.
Sign my petition and join me in asking Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairwoman of the State Bank of India, to repeal this discriminatory and regressive hike in the Monthly Account Balance and the Account Non-Maintenance charges.
