Tax free Period

In a scenario when our society is advancing towards all round development, we seem so unprogressive about something as significant as menstruation. Our society has structured our mindset in a manner that we dont discuss openly about period issues. That is why a prominent problem of taxing sanitary products has evaded us ever since.
Sanitary products are a necessity and should be accessible to everyone. According to SheSays, only 12% of the female population in India uses sanitary products. There are various reports that depict that around 20-25% girls drop out of schools once they start menstruating.
With millions of petitions being filed to address the issue, The Goods and Service Tax Council has put sanitary napkins and tampons still under the 12% slab. What we overlook every single time is that sanitary napkins are as much an urgent need for a "village girl" as for a "city girl". Therefore, taxing menstrual hygiene products is a violation of a basic human right.
