Over the past two years, I have been in conversation with my peers and younger friends as well as inspiring seniors in the arts about young people's lack of awareness of British Artists who are people of colour. I spent the summer of 2018 writing my masters dissertation about the gap between my generation today and the Black British Art generation of the 1980s and 1990s. It has become clear to me that the main reason for young people’s lack of awareness of British Artists who are people of colour is the limited, sometimes zero, access to resources about these individuals and their history in our arts education. A number of us have been lucky enough to encounter the inspiring works of Lubaina Himid, Sonia Boyce and Sutapa Biswas during our university education but we realise that not many ethnic minority art students see enough representations of ourselves to continue studying the arts to reach this point.

These conversations have motivated me to set up For My Younger Self which is a project that can act as a resource for A Level students to study the works of British Artists who are people of colour. For My Younger Self will be based at The Royal Standard in Liverpool. Due to its location, the project will focus specifically on British Artists who are people of colour who are from, have studied in or are based in the North of England. This project will include a set of reading materials that can be distributed to schools and colleges in Liverpool with hope to engage with ethnic minority art students. It will also host a series of dinners for ethnic minority students to meet British Artists who are people of colour as possible opportunities for crit sessions or casual socials. To conclude the project, both students and artists who have participated in this project are invited share their reflection of For My Younger Self through participating in an exhibition at The Royal Standard in 2020.

I am currently looking at the possible ways to fund to For My Younger Self. I would greatly appreciate the support of students and artists, as well as curators, librarians and academics amongst many others who can put your name to this project. You don’t have to be a person of colour and/or based in the North of England to show your support. Every help counts and  positive alliances need to be built across the board.

The conversations over the past two years show that there is a demand for this project to happen and so it’s time that we come together to make this demand visible.

Please also include your name and profession win the comment box below to make this demand visible.

Thank you.
