Art Teachers in every Queensland Primary School

As a Teacher in the Queensland Education system, I feel it is time we allowed our children the creative outlets that they need and want. Currently, the regular classroom teacher is responsible for the Art curriculum in Queensland schools. I believe this needs to change. Let's take the responsibility off the classroom teacher and give it to a trained professional who has the ability to foster creativity in Queensland's children.
Sir Ken Robinson, a leader in the future of Education states "Schools kill creativity, We don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it. We are educating people out of their creative capacities". If we allocate a trained Visual Arts Teacher in every primary school in Queensland to foster the unique abilities of our children, imagine how this will change our output. We have teachers for Music and Physical Education, isn't Visual Arts as important?
Ask any student how they feel about Art class, you will most likely hear, "I Love It" , "Its the best part of the day". Children love art because Art allows children freedom of expression. Our children are constantly bombarded with messages and commands during their day, Art is an outlet for them to be in control.
The change will have a three way benefit; firstly the children will have a planned Art session per week, whereby they are free to express their artistic side and explore and expand their imaginations. As Sir Ken Robinson says " If you sit kids down hour after hour, doing low-grade clerical work, don't be surprised if they start to fidget".
Secondly, classroom teachers will be given time to plan and organise the classroom and their learning environments, day and time. The curriculum is already overloaded for Primary Schools, lets take some of the weight off the classroom teacher and see how much further our children can grow.
Thirdly, a specific Visual Art teacher in the school creates jobs for teachers. Art teachers are the norm in Victorian schools. No wonder they are so cultural and vibrant in the southern state. It's all part of the curriculum AND facilitated by a leader, artist and lover of all things creative. Let's make Queensland as creative and vibrant as it can be, lets give the leaders of tomorrow a kick start.
Please sign the petition to the Education Minister and Premier of Queensland to show them we care about our children's education. We want and NEED Arts teachers in every primary school. Please help and share the petition with your friends and colleagues to help us get this initiative off the ground.
