Kerry Dunn started this petition to Army Families Federation and

One of my three children will be starting school next September 2021 when he turns five. He's August born so we have decided to defer inline with the summer born admissions code. He will start school at compulsory school age (5).

I have spoken to three local schools, one of which is an academy school in Wiltshire and they are happy to support my application for a reception start  and would take him at reception. However there are some schools depending on county that are submissive with the summerborn admission code and will decline for the child to join the school in Reception and force them to skip a vital foundation year and move them to straight into Year 1.

Military families are at a disadvantage to this process due to the number of moves throughout ones career.

A military child could move several times during their primary school education and for those that are out of cohort it's a concern that some schools might not agree to keep a child in their current cohort class and they could potentially make them skip a year. It's a postcode lottery at the moment with regards to whether a school would agree or not but in comparison to a civilian family that is unlikely to move within seven years of a child's initial education, military families are at an educational disadvantage in this process.

Extra support and guidance within the army covenant needs to be provided for military families and their children's needs with summerborn admissions. Families need the backing of the AFF and CEAS with summerborn admissions. We shouldn't have to keep battling for our child's education at each subsequent primary/secondary school due to military postings. Any military child that has entered primary education following the summer born admissions guidelines should stay within their adjusted cohort for the duration of their education.
