School is known to be one of the most important aspects of life. Mental health is also one of the most important aspects of life. However, most of the time school seems to always come first which can negatively affect mental health. During the Covid-19 pandemic, this has become significantly worse causing more and more students to become depressed or have many other mental illnesses. Due to social isolation, many students like myself have felt a sense of loneliness. Some students have experienced an increase in domestic violence and abuse during the pandemic cause more exposure to mental illness. Trauma and grief of loss during the pandemic increase the risk of mental health issues further. A lot of high school juniors and seniors fear that they will not have a normal senior year and miss out on prom, graduation, and even their last homecoming.

The workload seems to have also increased in the 2020-2021 school year, which is causing negative effects on students like me who feel hopeless and if no one understands what they are going through. Students are being expected to give their 100% in online classes no matter what issues they are facing in their personal lives whether it be by parents or teachers. I believe that is absolutely unfair because no one has been in a situation a severe as this. We are being forced to attend online school due to a deadly pandemic while not being certain if we or a family member will get infected and lose our life due to it. APS should take a step back and realize how much students have to go through during this pandemic emotionally. Something should not have to happen to a student for something to be done. Reform should be done to prevent the loss of students due to their failure to battle mental illness. Personally, my mental illness has been negatively impacted and I'm stressed by the fact that there is so much work and I'm struggling to keep up and I have to make sure I impress my parents with my grades and maintain a good GPA for college I never get a break from all of these overwhelming thoughts and that makes it hard to be happy and to complete work to my full ability and get good grades.

Even though some may disagree with it I believe a pass-fail system would be extremely beneficial for students. It would take some stress off of students to maintain a perfect GPA and show their parents "perfect grades". The Pass-Fail system that I am proposing would be optional so that the people who are happening to perform at 100% are allowed to opt-out and have a GPA boost. However, if a student has been negatively impacted by this pandemic whether it be their mental health, the grief of a loss, loneliness, or helplessness like me they deserve the choice to have their grade be pass-fail. Based on the data I’ve gathered most students want a pass-fail system where you can have a choice per class since some classes work better online while most don’t. I care about the mental health of everyone and I don't want anything to happen to any of the APS students due to anxiety, stress, or just feeling overwhelmed. I believe that this year has been a real bad one and it’s absolutely unfair that our GPAs are being impacted by this unusual situation. APS only you can change this I am calling on you to please  make this change. Think about the students it would improve my mental health and I'm 99% sure it would improve others as well :)
