Create Smart School Solutions for Arlington Public Schools' Enrollment & Transfer Policies

The Arlington County Public Schools’ Board has proposed dramatic changes to the Arlington County Public Schools (APS) Enrollment and Transfer Policy (25-2.2) that will be implemented in the 2018-2019 school year. These changes will be voted on in June of 2017.

These changes are drastic, cause substantial concerns, and raise numerous questions that both APS staff and the school board have not addressed. The proposed changes will have a significant impact on those attending the Team Schools (Taylor, Jamestown, Arlington Science Focus, and Key). As currently drafted, the new policy will lead to greater crowding and less choices. In short it will measurably make our schools worse off, exacerbate crowding, and provide no quantifiable improvement to the most important issue – the instruction of our students.

Before any changes should be implemented or voted on, The School Board needs to address how they will handle:

  1. Grandfathering current students and their siblings and their transportation needs
  2. Creating walk zones around neighborhood schools
  3. Increased overcrowding at schools already well over capacity

We must make our voices heard, and hold the School Board accountable for how these concerns will be addressed before any changes are voted on and implemented.

Some of the School Board’s proposed changes include:

  • Eliminating the Team (for example, this means enrollment at Arlington Science Focus would be limited to those in the Key/Arlington Science Focus neighborhood zone, not the walkable zone where ASFS is sited or any Taylor and Jamestown students)
  • Changing Key School into an option-only countywide lottery school (meaning those in the current Key/ASFS neighborhood zone will no longer be guaranteed admission to Key) will import students from across the County into the most overcrowded schools.

These changes could displace a significant portion of the current student body out of Key and into Jamestown, ASFS, and Taylor, which are projected to be at 100%, 121%, and 104% capacity respectively in SY18-19 even before the policy change. If the School Boards changes are implemented these numbers will be much worse and the schools will not be able to handle the over-population and continue to deliver the high calibre of instruction for APS students.

We need to make our voices heard!

Sign this petition to send a message to Arlington County Public Schools and the School Board that we do not support any changes until our concerns our addressed. We implore the School Board to present plans and engage with community on how they will address these big picture concerns; particularly grandfathering current students and siblings, creating walk zones around neighborhood schools and, overcrowding;  before any voting occurs or changes are implemented.
