I'm also FOR changing the name. I came on here to look for a petition supporting a name change but couldn't find one. I agree with what Steven Miller said and would only add that Washington was not only a Slave owner but also ordered acts of genocide against the Iroquois people & other Indian tribes. In a 1779 letter he stated: "The immediate objects are the total destruction and devastation of their settlements and the capture of as many prisoners of every age and sex as possible. It will be essential to ruin their crops now in the ground and prevent their planting more." Some 40 Iroquois villages were destroyed. This may have earned him the nickname "town destroyer," though some sources indicate he already had that nickname because of earlier attacks on tribes in VA. The name should definitely be changed. I'd like to see the school named after a Civil Rights hero or something, but HS 123 would be better than W-L. It's an embarrassment. I am a W-L Alum, class of 07'.

Return to the time honored name of Washington-Lee. Infantile PC revisionism has lasted long enough.

Has anyone on the school board done their research? Robert E. Lee wasn't a slaveholder. His wife's family owned the slaves. When his wife inherited her father's slaves, Lee legally tried to free them in 1862. Calling Lee a "treasonous traitor" is ridiculous. That would mean all of the founding fathers were traitors. If someone is attacking your home or state, you defend it. Besides, two-thirds of polled Arlingtonians don't want the name change.

The name of the school is inextricably woven in with the identity of Arlington. To deny the name is to deny our history, good or bad. This move to change the name was an arrogant and undemocratic action with no public discussion that I am aware of. Let’s put it a vote in the next local election

The name is set. The definition is clear, the story did happen. But we can use this name and honor the history.

Its the right thing to do.Changing the name is not going to change history and General Lee was a fine General before the Civil War ever exhisted
