In March 2020, Schools throughout the United Kingdom closed their doors to all school/Pre-school children due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In Northern Ireland, schools did not reopen until 6 months later. Home remote learning became the only source of curriculum based education for children during this time.

As parents, it has been crucial to facilitate children’s’ remote learning to ensure a generation of children are not disadvantaged in their educational attainment. Unfortunately, the hard reality is that children of working parents have been greatly disadvantaged during remote learning.

As key worker parents, children are cared for inconsistently by various people while schools are closed. This may be in the form of childcare provided by schools as outlined by the government (although many did not reopen), childminders, private daycare/crèche and various family/friendship circles.

Either way, remote learning for many has not taken place in the schools that reopened to provide childcare. Daycare facilities cannot facilitate this either. Many schools require personal user names and passwords in order to access teaching materials on GoogleClassroom. Many schools could not provide hard copies of teaching materials due to the additional costs and infection control measures. For pre-school and primary school children, they are completely dependant on their parents/care givers to facilitate and access their remote learning materials . Where working parents continue their roles in society, they are not physically with their children during their “normal school” hours.

After 3 months of Face-to-Face school education, we again are facing school closures as we continue through the pandemic.

Working parents including key worker parents NEED to have PROTECTED time to facilitate remote learning for their children. I propose to the UK government and the Northern Ireland Executive, that Key Worker parents are given at least 6 HOURS of PROTECTED time per week to physically TEACH their children their school work that is remotely given.  I propose that this is additional Government scheme that allows ALL employers/organisations to allocate PROTECTED TIME to their employees and their children.

The Furlough Scheme has been a financial aid for those who have been unfortunate with work during the pandemic. There NEEDS to be an equivalent for the working parent and the school-aged-child.
