The tragic death of The University of Arizona Biosphere-2 scientist Rafe Sagarin the evening of May 28 in a car-bike collision on Arizona highway 77 sent the whole University of Arizona community, bikers and non-bikers alike into shock. It not only brought heartbreak to our community, but stole one of our brightest minds.
Rafe was an unorthodox scientist who transformed his passion for marine biology into a great enthusiasm for the exploration of the natural world and for learning from the way organisms respond to threats. He was also a visionary educator of students, policy makers, military leaders, and the general public alike. The sorrow and discontent produced by what could have been an avoidable accident has reinvigorated our concern about the safety of our roads, particularly on the portion of State highway 77 between Mile maker 99 north to the junction of the town of Oracle.
As a community we want to honor Rafe and help improve the safety of the road through the creation of a model safe-bike lane dedicated to him. We propose the creation of a one mile lane segment at the accident site, with separation elements, that would create a bike/run path aside from the main road. We believe that this small project, besides offering a model biking/running experience for its users could raise awareness on the importance of safe transportation for all road participants.
Oracle Rd. is highly transited by both bikers and runners daily and is used frequently by bike/run events that come to Oracle. It is time to show that we, as a community, care about having friendlier roads for all and will take action to prevent further avoidable loss of life.
Thank you for your consideration. Rafe and the other road users appreciate it.
