With COVID-19 shutting the world down in 2020 many people tried to find something to do with their mass amount of newly found free time, and one of the things people found was skateboarding, myself included. Skateboarding has introduced me to a whole new world, I have met some of my closest friends and made some of my favourite memories during my time skateboarding and I couldn’t be more grateful for it. Although there is a problem… not only in Dunoon but in a lot of smaller communities, there isn’t a good skatepark, yes there is a skatepark but it does not facilitate good skateboarding, from the rusty metal ramps to the bumpy rough concrete the park simply isn’t fit for purpose. Having a safe comfortable environment to skate in is very important. If a kid who wants to learn how to skateboard falls and hurts themselves because of a bad ramp they will be discouraged from getting up and trying again but with good equipment and safe surroundings children will be more likely to stick with this amazing sport and continue to make amazing memories.

A well designed and managed skatepark would become a social hub for the community. A skatepark can be a catalyst for healthy community life in which young and old socialise, have fun, develop new skills, make new friends, hang out and much more. Especially a park designed by skaters for skaters. Skateparks are social spaces that nurture certain types of Behaviour; they are not ‘unregulated’, ‘lawless’ or ‘chaotic’ like they are sometimes portrayed in the media. They are always models of Behaviour(waiting in line for example or applauding skill)that brings users together; skateparks are places that both require and teach mutual respect, discipline and togetherness, through a shared appreciation of the sport.

Contrary to popular belief a skatepark isn’t just made for skateboards, in Dunoon there is a large variety of different extreme sports that require safer and better practicing grounds. For example there are a number of bmx, scooter and rollerblade riders in this town who struggle to achieve their maximum potential purely because of the lack of proper equipment. With a better space for practicing said sports people from all the different communities would have a place to merge and mingle creating opportunities for new friendships to be made.

With the current state of the park it tends to attract the wrong crowd and can often be used as a dumping ground for broken glass and plastic bottles deterring skaters from coming to the park at all because when they do go they have to tidy it before they can skate. With a brand new skatepark built it would create a new sense of respect for that area of the community making it less likely to be left a mess and be used a lot more by locals. It would also create more opportunities for tourism as people would come to Dunoon to try out the skatepark and if executed well enough would create a better reputation for Dunoon as a whole.

In conclusion, we as members of the community can safely say that a new skatepark would benefit lots of people in many different positive ways as well as create touristic, financial and social opportunities for the community as a whole and will continue to do so for generations to come.
