David Laufer started this petition to Archuleta County School Board

The Board of Education of Archuleta School District 50 JT has announced the vacancies of Director District Three (3) and Director District Five (5).  The Board has 60 days from November 9, 2021 to appoint new Board members. We believe the school board should reflect the diversity of our community and our schools.  Before the vacancies, the 5 current district members were all white, 4 men and 1 woman.  According to recent Census figures Archuleta County is 77% white, 18% Hispanic and 3% American Indian. Our School District student body is significantly more diverse:  it is 53% white, 34% Hispanic and 8% American Indian.

The Board’s Nondiscrimination Policy states that the Board will “consider carefully, in all decisions made which affect the schools, the potential benefits or adverse consequences that those decisions might have on the human relations aspects of all segments of society.” The Board is better able to do that successfully if it too better represents “all segments of society.”

We call on Board Members Tim Taylor (District 1), Robert Lynch (District 2) and Dana Howard (District 4) to identify, recruit and select two qualified candidates who better reflect the diversity of our community and the student body, and at least one of whom is a woman.
