Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston: Apologize for Co-Cathedral incident

This petition had 43 supporters

The archdiocese has recently allowed the city's co-cathedral to be used by a female UMC bishop to ordain a few hundred UMC pastors, mostly female.

Since the UMC is officially pro-abortion and pro-birth control, this recent action calls into question our archdiocese' commitment to promoting core Catholic values. This is especially poor timing, as our Catholic Church and its schools and charities are under attack from our federal government concerning matters of birth control and abortion. Since the "bishop" and most of those ordained were women, this incident calls into question the archdiocese' loyalty to the Church's teachings on an exclusively male priesthood.

Also, there was no legitimate need for the UMC to use the Co-cathedral for this event, since there is an equally large and beautiful UMC facility nearby.

This incident reflects a lack of respect for Catholic identity and tradition, as well as a lack of pastoral concern for Catholics in the archdiocese who are deeply concerned with tradition and identity.

I ask that in addition to signing this petition, you please call the archdiocese (713-659-5461) and inform them that contrary to their recent public statement, 1993 Decree on the Principles and Norms on Ecumenism paragraphs 137-140 do NOT give them unconditional permission for this sort of action. The decree only gives permission in cases where our Protestant brothers do not have an adequate facility of their own, or in cases of jointly owned or shared properties.
