Arcadia Student started this petition to Arcadia High School and

On April 1, 2021, Arcadia Student government violated Scottsdale Unified School District and Governor Doug Ducey’s mask mandate. Though he lifted some COVID-19 restrictions recently, that does not apply to public school settings as per State superintendent Kathy Hoffman’s Twitter message.

On Arcadia STUGO’s social media, 35 juniors and seniors decided to ill-advisedly pose in a photo of their prom outfits without masks. Students applaud the prom fashion show Arcadia’s STUGO displayed that day, but they do not applaud other students without masks. We, the student body, care about our health, not smiles.

This is completely unacceptable and unfair to other students on Arcadia High School’s campus. We wear masks to reduce the chances of COVID-19. We wear masks to be considerate of one another. We wear masks to keep one another safe. That is why every club and class actively wears masks. Arcadia STUGO has publicly stated that one of their own objectives is to keep us healthy and protected. So, why is it now that they go against their own word and violate the trust with which we empowered them?

It has also come to our attention that their social media account was actively trying to delete students’ comments about the lack of masks present in their photo. The handler, or representative of Arcadia’s Student government social media, actively tried to silence the student body. Whoever is behind the page also viewed some students’ social media posts about their prom photo and actively ignored them. We, the student body, wish to have our voices heard.  Our own history teachers have advised us to not tolerate the absence of actions some governments display today and in the past. That is why we, the student body, demand an apology and accountability from the Arcadia Student Government including any individuals involved in the photo, including faculty administration.
