Dear AQA,

I have taken it upon myself to create a petition, asking for the A Level Photography specification to become more up-to-date. I believe that it would be beneficial to students studying this course if rather than completing coursework in written form, in workbooks, that we instead have a website to upload our work to.

There are many issues that I, myself, find with using workbooks for my coursework which my fellow students in my class seemingly agree with. The first I wish to address, is that as we have to use workbooks, costs for the subject start to add up. Supposedly, education is meant to be free and something all can access; but I believe that A Level Photography restricts some students. Those students without economic capital are at a disadvantage as using workbooks with black pages (which, I agree, creates a good aesthetic for photos but has drawbacks) means they must purchase the appropriate equipment such as good quality pens and photographic paper; the cost of such materials adds up greatly and can quickly become too much for students to afford. The subject is systematically failing students from less affluent backgrounds which I find is a great disservice to the ideology of education for all.

Other issues I hold with the use of workbooks include that: over the course of the qualification, it is expected to go through at least four workbooks (quoted from my subject teacher). Granted the amount of students who take A Level Photography, this is ultimately damaging to our environment. An eco-friendly alternative we could turn to is making the coursework online. I also believe that the requirement of displaying work by hand therefore takes away time students could be spending on completing practical work and developing their photographic skills.

This shift to online work would have huge benefits, as well as allowing more time to work on projects, going online would: always guarantee students photos are seen at a high resolution (as sometimes lacking the appropriate paper leads to a decrease in image quality which is extremely unfair and undermines the students hard work) and also mean film work could be displayed in a way that increases its quality as its scanned into computers. This change would also lift an economic weight from colleges as they need not worry about having to provide such materials for students.

Please take this into consideration to help better the education of future students.
