Due to the corona virus, Azusa Pacific University has decided to cancel the Spring 2020 commencement rather than postpone it to a later date. As graduating seniors, we feel that this measure is unfair to all seniors and family members of seniors. While we understand that this decision was made for safety reasons and that the disease is out of the school’s control, the decision to simply cancel commencement instead of postponing have left many seniors and their families very unhappy. After paying tens of thousands of dollars and working hard for four years, we want the school to promise to schedule a commencement for the class of 2020 at a later date when there is no longer a health concern. Specifically for first generation students, there is no greater achievement than getting to participate in a graduation ceremony in front of family members. We have been told that APU is working on an alternative plan to honor seniors, but as seniors we know that nothing will compare to a graduation ceremony. This petition was made to ensure that the seniors at APU are honored at a future graduation ceremony to make up for the one that was taken away from us due to the corona virus. We ask that you help us achieve our goal so that we can be honored in front of our friends and families for our higher education achievements.
