Build APS New High School Seats at Kenmore

Arlington Public Schools will need thousands more high school seats in the coming years as our growing elementary classes move up to secondary school.  The Arlington School Board has $150 million bond capacity to build 1300 seats by 2022 and is going to decide by June 2017 where to locate those seats.  The three options it is considering are:

1) Build an addition onto Washington-Lee High School: this would involve tearing down the Ed Center and Planetarium, which occupy a small corner of the WL campus (22 acres total), and constructing a new building to house the 9th graders at WL and a larger IB program, or a larger IB program plus a new World Languages program.  Students would share common spaces and fields with students already at WL.  This would place 3500 to 4000 high school students in one location.

2) Build a new high school co-located with the middle school on the Kenmore campus (32 acres total): this would be a smaller high school initially but would have the potential to become a 4th comprehensive high school if a new middle school building can be built elsewhere in the near future.  School start times could be staggered, and officials have recognized the need to improve access to the campus to relieve traffic.

3) Build a new high school co-located with the Arlington Tech (AT) program at the Career Center site (8 acres total): this would likely be a choice program, as there are no fields on site and the 1300 new students would have to share the campus with 800 AT students.

The Kenmore option is the only option that establishes a solid pathway to a 4th comprehensive high school, which the APS system desperately needs.  Please sign the petition to support the Kenmore option and the eventual creation of a 4th comprehensive high school.
