Approve Howard High’s Participation in National School Walkout

As you may already be aware, the student-founded political action group Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is organizing a nationwide school walkout to take place between 10:00 and 10:17 AM on the one month anniversary of the Majory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, March 14th, 2018. Though I and many other students understand that such an event may be considered a disruption to the learning environment, I urge you to take into account the fact that this protest is both part of an escalating force in the larger fight against gun violence and an opportunity for students to reinforce our commitment to action until the federal government enacts legislative change with respect to the issue. Furthermore, this day will be of particular importance to Howard High School as the lives of two students were lost to gun violence in 2017 and we have received both a bomb threat and a mass shooting threat over the course of the past five years, all of which have deeply affected our community and because of which it would be unjustifiable to deprive our student body of the right to participate in such a pivotal movement. As this walkout is to take place on a Wednesday, we the students of Howard High are requesting the privilege to adjust our regularly scheduled Lion’s Time to coincide with the walkout without risk of disciplinary action. Thank you for your consideration.
