Christopher Porter started this petition to Apple Valley Town Council

At the threat of a lawsuit, the Town of Apple Valley is being forced to transistion to district-based elections. The town and the council have put forth several maps indicating potential town council districts. A majority of these maps include five town council districts. One contains four districts and an at-large mayor. With the transition to district-based elections it is important that our town also have an at-large mayor. This would mean that the residents of each town council district would be able to vote for one representative on the council and their mayor. The alternative would be only being able to vote for one representative on the council, while the council would select the mayor. A potential downside to district-based council elections is that council members will tend to favor and work for the interest of their district, rather than the town as a whole, this is why having an at-large mayor is so important. We need someone who will work for the good of the whole town, not just their district. This may not be an issue with the current council, however, eventually we will have different council members and I fear that it will become divisive as each member works for the good of their own district, whilst the good of the town takes a back seat. With an at-large Mayor, we will always have someone who cares about the whole town and all of its residents.
