Mobile technology is a common part of modern day life in Australia, and many children interact with this technology from early childhood.

Apps have to make money, so where is this money coming from?

-Apps that claim to be ‘free’ have paid content
-This is seen in; in-app purchases. They are incredibly widespread across mobile application stores such as google play (android) and the app store (apple)
-As applications for mobile devices can have multiple purposes (reminders, banking, gaming, note-taking, etc) it is inevitable that some applications will target children and young people.
-App developers input features on children’s apps that give access to ‘shops’ for paid content.
-For example: coins, loot boxes, chance items, removing ads as well as ‘free trials’ (that often will charge money if the service is not cancelled during the trial period).
-One of the main reasons consumers purchase in-app content, is to remove repetitive and disruptive advertisements that interrupt use of applications, these advertisements often have misleading features that steer the person using the app into making purchases.

We aim to raise awareness and ban these misleading features from applications targeting children and young people.
