Apple should cancel planned data center in Iowa
Apple should cancel planned data center in Iowa
On March 3, 2022, Iowa governor Kim Reynolds signed a law banning trans women athletes from competing in women's sports at every level in the state (school, college, and university athletics). The law was enacted immediately during the Iowa High School Girl's State Basketball Tournament, possibly affecting athletes competing at the highest stage in high school basketball. It disrupts current sports teams and is intended to discriminate against trans women.
Apple announced in 2017 that the company planned to build a new state-of-the-art data center in Waukee, IA, in a move that would bring over 500 jobs to the state and invest $1.4 billion dollars in the area in the first phase. Apple has provided plans to the city of Waukee recently and they tentatively plan to start construction in spring of 2022.
Apple claims that inclusion and diversity efforts are a significant part of their corporate culture. Apple's inclusion and diversity webpage contains a quote from Barbara Whye, Vice President of Inclusion & Diversity:
"Inclusion and diversity are cornerstones of the global Apple community. We’re proud of the foundation we’ve built, and we’re clear-eyed about the challenges that remain. Together, we’re committed to continuing this journey with humility and resolve."
We call on Apple to strongly denounce Iowa's ban on trans women athletes. We encourage Apple to put a hold on plans to build a data center in Iowa to show that they are committed to inclusion and diversity efforts and that they support trans women rights. We also ask that Apple encourage Iowa governor Kim Reynolds and the state legislature to rescind the ban before they commit to spending any more money in the state.
