Why this petition matters

As I'm writing this I am also doing a physical petition making rounds around my college (which is at 100! Go me.) So without further ado...

The Apple Watch has become a staple for what Smartwatches have become. With its health tracking being the one of the best, it’s leading beyond the Samsung Gear and Google’s own wearOS for many reasons. However, it’s been locked down to where you are forced to get an iPhone. According to a survey by DeviceAtlas in 2019, most countries have Android over iOS. (For reference, the survey provided on their website shows the popularity of iOS Devices in the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan, and Australia)

Additionally, the demand for support on Android is there as expressed in a recent update to the watchOS system, that being the app store where you can install standalone apps to the watch. Despite this Apple refuses to provide support for Android.. for now. By signing this petition, you are voicing support for bringing Android Support for Apple Watch.

Why should I sign it?
Android Support will provide more competition in the wearable market in countries that are populated with Android devices (or prefer Android devices due to security or ease of access). Like I explained with the Device Atlas survey above.

Apple’s recent ventures into Health has led to some groundbreaking features that would be beneficial to Android users, such as cycle tracking and recently its noise leveling app. Not only that if they want to promote global health, opening it up to countries that mostly run android phones will get the benefits from that.

Having it tied to an iPhone unfairly creates a monopoly with the smartwatch market. Most smartwatches on the market work with both operating systems, locking the Apple Watch with iOS in the long run will create a monopoly in the smartwatch market and if possible the smartphone market. Competition is a beautiful thing but this lock in strategy will fail in the near future as more people will invest in Android devices.

Side note with this point: When the original iPod was released it can only work on Macs, so Apple decided to lift it with iTunes for Windows later in its lifespan. Also, there was a time where you can only set up your iDevices by hooking it up with your computer, now it’s without it, why will Apple Watch still be tied to it?

In conclusion:

Besides personally wanting it to happen, there is a bigger picture here that Apple ignores. With world still running on Android, having the opportunity for growth is possible. We need Apple to hear that Android users have a say in the matter too. Competition in the Smartwatch market needs to be open for more people, not forcing people to buy an iPhone just for a watch.
