As a deaf individual with hearing aids, it is not ever likely that I will hear like a normal person. I am exceedingly grateful for advancements in technology that allow me to hear and communicate. However, I avoid calling people because I cannot understand them on the phone. The buzz of the telecommunication is muffled and harder for deaf people to understand without the ability to read lips. FaceTime is more comfortable to communicate with because we can read lips, but it is still extremely difficult. As a teenager, I communicate a lot over the phone and will be having a few interviews over the phone within the next few months. I want to be able to understand who I am talking to so that I can have a better chance of having a normal conversation. 1 in 20 Americans is struggling with deafness and have loved ones and friends that they want to communicate with during this time of social isolation. It is my hope that Apple will understand that many of their consumers are unable to communicate normally over the phone and be willing to provide a closed caption option on FaceTime or regular phone calls. The addition of captions on Voice Mail is extremely helpful and I hope that Apple will continue to advance.
