Appalachian State University Chancellor Everts does not intend to allow the use of the Student Union for early and election day voting this year. We the students and community of Boone and Watauga county want to preserve the Blue Ridge Ballroom in Appalachian State University’s Plemmons Student Union as a voting site. Election Sites being moved or up in the air only serve to suppress the vote and create questions and uncertainty. The Blue Ridge Ballroom has been a reliable, constant, and central location for voting, that served both students and members of our community. Not only does it have precedent as a voting site but the location and size of the site allows for social distancing in unique times, providing a safe place for citizens looking to exercise their right to vote. We strongly encourage Appalachian State’s administration to reserve the Blue Ridge Ballroom as a voting site so students and community members know they have a protected and deserved voting site.
