Jonathan Ring started this petition to Appalachian State University

On July 2nd, 2021, students and staff of Appalachian State University were notified via email that physical parking passes will no longer be issued and, more notably, that backing into or pulling through parking spaces will now be prohibited and will result in a citation.

The only given reason for this new ban on backing in/pulling through is “license plates must be facing the driving path in order for the software to register the plate’s number”.

I urge App State’s administration to reverse this decision, as backing into spaces is much safer than than pulling into them. In addition, it leads to far fewer accidents, due to being able to see both when parking and pulling out. And, as someone who has had their parked vehicle hit on campus, I have noticed that there are very few cameras near parking lots and as such it is very easy for people to get away after causing an accident. I believe this will only add to the problem.

This change in policy in no way significantly benefits students or staff. It simply ensures that it is as as easy as possible for parking enforcement to give citations to non-permitted parkers. The risk of increased accidents and the added inconvenience to parkers, especially those of large vehicles, seriously outweigh the only given reason of the change- an increase in citation efficiency.
