Dear Appalachian State University,

Due to COVID-19, Appalachian adopted a Pass-No Credit grading system opt-in choice for all undergraduates in the spring 2020 semester. This policy was approved by the Deans Council and Undergraduate Academic Policies and Procedures Committee. See registrar site; https://registrar.appstate.edu/coronavirus-updates

However, there was no mass communication of this opt in that was cut off on August 21. The only fair grading policy during this global pandemic is a readily available Universal Pass Grading System throughout the semester. As the situation constantly changes, putting a cut off on the "opt in" is pointless. There is still the looming threat of everything changing and students being sent home. With the majority of the UNC system going all online, ASU students face uncertainty in their classes. In using this system, it ensures that no student is left behind during COVID-19.

The Universal Pass Grading System (UP) is the only fair option that does not exclude any student, all while making sure that safety and education are top priority. The Universal pass system, ensures in making every student pass in times of this global pandemic. This system has not been used since the 1960's, a time when the Vietnam War was occurring.

Students are experiencing external factors making it more difficult to focus on schoolwork. There are still students unable to come to campus for class. Whether that is because they are protecting themselves or their families, they are having to take online classes completely. All students attending Appalachian State University have a right to continue their education without being penalized by external factors they can not control in this continuously changing learning environment.

Please take this into consideration,

Roll Neers!
