Apartment management companies: Stop requiring cats to be declawed!

Declawing is the surgical operation of removing a cat's claws by AMPUTATING THE LAST JOINT OF HIS OR HER TOES. Declawing is an archaic procedure and illegal in many European countries. Many apartment management companies allow cats, but some require them to be declawed in order to rent a unit. These companies need to be informed of how the declawing procedure is performed and the effects it has on the cat.

Declawing methods:

-with a scalpel or guillotine clipper (most common)

-with a laser beam that cuts through the tissue by vaporizing it

Effects:

-Adverse reaction to anesthetic

-Gangrene, which can lead to limb amputation

-Hemorrhaging

-Permanent nerve damage

-Persistent pain

-Reluctance to walk

-Scar tissue formation

-Sequestrum (bone chips), requiring additional surgery

-Skin disorders

"Declawing results in a gradual weakening of leg, shoulder, and back muscles, and because of impaired balance caused by the procedure, declawed cats have to relearn to walk, much as a person would after losing his or her toes" (PETA).

There have also been long term effects linked to declawing such as a change in the cat's personality. Without their natural defense they might become ornery. The resulting insecurity might lead to urinating and defecating outside the litter box to mark their territory.

Declawing is a completely UNNECESSARY procedure. Let's protect our beautiful feline friends. Thank you very much for your support!
