Working to reduce Youth  Crime rates in Canada.

The purpose of this petition is to see change in youth crime. We want to raise awareness towards teenage crime and see a difference in the teenage crime rate and see it drop locally in the GTA. This topic is very important as there has not been any change addressing youth crime. There were almost 101,000 youth aged 12 to 17 accused of Criminal Code violations reported by police in 2014, resulting in a youth crime rate of 4,322 per 100,000 youth population. One in ten incidents where a youth was accused occurred at school during school hours or a supervised activity. This just shows how important this topic is regarding school, and action needs to be taken to reduce this. Weapons were slightly more likely to be present in violent incidents involving youth accused than those where no youth was involved. In 2014, 13% of violent incidents involving youth accused that took place on school grounds at any time involved weapons, primarily knives or blunt instruments. Youth Crimes is not something scarce that rarely happens, in fact, 37% of youth have reported to having engaged to one or more delinquent behaviours in their lifetime. Youth violent crime severity index is 69.1 and has rose up 14% from 2015 to 2016 Drugs are also a major crime that have been connected to teenage crime. For example, In 2014, there were approximately 15,300 youth accused of drug offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, a rate of 657 per 100,000 youth. This was about three times the rate for older adults aged 25 and older, but lower than the rate for young adults aged 18 to 24.

There have been many past and current efforts to help reduce youth crime rates. For example an aggressive person can be ordered to attend a course to learn how to cope with and control aggression. Schools can have students suspended or expelled if a crime is occurred on school property, which can sometimes teach a lesson but isn't enough. Locker checks, bag checks, and a police man on campus are some of the other ways to help reduce teenage crime. In school, they have implemented new curriculum to help prevent students in being engaged in delinquent behaviour. We request support to lower the youth crime by signing our petition and getting it out there for more people to sign. We just want awareness on this topic, and for people to know that statistics of youth crime and why something must be done to reduce it. Youth crime could lead to destruction of a child’s future, and something must be done to stop this. All we want is for you to get our petition out there and let our community be educated on this topic to see the change we need. This is not just for our civics assignment, but more for the kids that cannot achieve their goals in life because of a mistake they made as a teenager that they truly regret.

We are grateful for what you have been doing in our community, and would appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you for your time and we hope you can do something about this problem in our community. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon, thank you.
