Dismantle the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter Board of Directors

A nonprofit board must oversee the nonprofit organization’s operations and make sure that its staff act legally and ethically. Within the past few weeks the shelter director, who was hired by the board, resigned after the public petitioned the unnecessary euthanizing of countless shelter pets, the public also wants an investigation into possible misuse of shelter funds regarding the new renovation project. The humane officer is on paid leave and being investigated, and the fundraising manager, who was previously convicted of stealing from past employment, was demoted and is no longer able to handle money at the shelter. The current board needs to be held accountable for these past decisions they made and should have been more actively involved in the organization for which they are responsible. If the public did not shed light on the issues going on at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, it would still be business as usual.
Our work is not yet done. The board of directors need to take accountability for what they allowed to happen to our shelter. The board is NOT innocent by any means for the condition of this shelter and those unfortunate animals under their care. These people have failed the shelter and community in their capacity as board members and need to resign for the reasons below:
o They allowed a $3 million dollar renovation that included a training/community room that sits empty while Griffin Pond is refusing strays because the new kennels are still not completed after a year of construction.
o Allowed the amount of dog cages in the new construction be reduced by approximately 30 kennels
o Volunteers were banned from dog walking since May until the public called attention to it.
o Mismanagement of pet food - Food was improperly stored, expired, contained maggot infestation resulting in hundreds of pounds being thrown out.
o Violated their own bylaws by not keeping adequate minutes, not enforcing the attendance policy of board members, allowed officers to serve past their terms, no established conflict of interest or whistle-blower policies, failure to adhere to or properly amend their by-laws.
o Just recently they hired an administrative position (someone on their own “investigative” team) without posting the job, accepting applications, and interviewing all potential candidates.
o Dogs continue to be kept in small, cramped cages after many were euthanized to make room.
The Board should be mandated to conduct a third party investigation rather than their own Finance and Governance committee made up of board members and the Community Advisory Board whom the board appointed.
This current board does not effectively represent the organization and its best interests. There has been a loss of community confidence because of their negligence for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. We want egos and politics out of our shelter and we need do what is best for the animals. The public and voting members of Griffin Pond need to take the shelter back and appoint a new board of directors immediately.
