Backyard Chickens in Alexandria—Let's Update the Ordinance
This petition had 273 supporters
We would like to amend the City ordinance to allow backyard chickens to be accessible to more Alexandria residents. Currently chickens ARE LEGAL in the City of Alexandria, however, the ordinance states that chickens must be keep 200 feet from neighboring residences, which is not consistent with typical Alexandria lot sizes and excludes almost all residents from legally raising chickens.
Backyard chickens are pets that provide more than just companionship and entertainment. They provide: 1. a sustainable and healthy food source, 2. natural pest control 3. ability to turn food scraps into fertilizer 4. an opportunity for egg sharing to foster community. 5. an opportunity for community members (like kids) to connect with natural cycles, including our food system, animal husbandry and hatching eggs.
