Dear Councilmember Antonio Reynoso.:

I write to you with an urgent plea for help on behalf of the children and families St. Nicks Alliance serves, and on behalf of children and families throughout your district and New York City. Mayor de Blasio has announced the closure of all summer programs for youth, including the Summer Youth Employment Program, summer camps operated through DYCD COMPASS and SONYC programs, Beacon programs, and NYCHA Cornerstone programs. This cut will be devastating to our community and we need your help to ensure that these essential programs for youth are funded.

Summer programs like ours are indispensable to the community’s recovery from COVID-19. If social distancing measures are still in effect, the community-based organizations who operate youth programs have the expertise and relationships with young people to ensure that they can remain safe and positively engaged indoors during the summer months. If social distancing measures are relaxed or ended by the summer, parents will be expected to return to work. We know the families that we serve likely will not be able to afford other childcare options, making the youth programs that St. Nicks Alliance runs all the more critical.

We ask for your help to ensure that children and families in Williamsburg, Brooklyn have the summer programs they need to recover from this unprecedented crisis. St. Nicks Alliance and other community-based organizations stand ready to carry out creative solutions to support young people and their families through the summer, if New York City is still social distancing or just coming out of social distancing.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Sandra Serva - Program Director
