Bullying, according to the Philippine Law is defined as any severe or repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at another student that has the effect of actually causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to his property.
Most of the actions done to retaliate bullying is intercepted at primary or secondary level of education and learning centers. With that in mind, most activities done to prevent bullying in the aforementioned was not as applied in the institutes for higher education or otherwise known as colleges. Usually, bullying is related to adolescence or an experience that which, at a time, a child will have to face. However, despite it being labeled as a child experience bullying stays consistent throughout a persons entire life.
According to the State University of New York, Bullying has been found to occur for college undergraduates with 18.5% reporting having been bullied once or twice and 22% reporting being the victim of cyber bullying. In addition to, the most common vehicles for cyber bullying reported include: social networking sites, text messages, emails, and instant messages. With the effects such as that adolescent and young adult students who engage in bullying towards others tend to have high emotionality, low self- control, and may lack empathy for others’ experiences. In one study, targets of cyber bullying endorsed significantly more suicidal behaviors than those who did not identify as a victim.
All in all, with the Republic Act 10627, or the Anti-Bullying Act, Anti-bullying measures are only limited from primary to secondary levels of education and learning centers despite it being an regular occurrence at the higher level of education.
