In our community, recycling has been a topic of debate for the past decade. Recently, Abilene ended recycling altogether, denying thousands of Abileneans the freedom to make eco-conscious decisions and creating literal tons of wasted materials. The City Council has deemed recycling a non-pressing issue. Statistics show recycling is a realistic way for the public to get involved and fight climate change, a severe problem affecting our planet. While our city council has said they are working on a solution to bring recycling back, little has been done to support their claims. Recycling is a realistic way for everyone to combat climate change. They risk Abilene's ecosystem, citizens' health, and the overall environment by denying the public the opportunity to recycle. Abilene citizens are responsible for pressing this issue and advocating for recycling to come back to our community. We cannot rely on other people to clean up the mess. Climate change is a real and pressing facing our planet; steps made in our community, no matter how small, are still steps in the right direction.
