The Coronavirus outbreak has affected many events throughout. Events such as the NBA, St. Patrick's Day Parade and Coachella have cancelled their event or postponed it until further notice.

The Erie County Health Commissioner and Erie County Executives are recommending no large events or gatherings of over 50 people to take place. Events such as PTA family nights, Elementary School recitals and Dollar for Scholars Craft Fair have been cancelled.

The Sweet Home High School consists of give or take 1015 students, 741 students in the Sweet Home Middle School and 1439 students in Elementary School. The hallways for our passing periods are crowded with students trying to get to their next class which can result in the easy spread of the virus easily. You cannot "socially distance" yourself from this at all. The cafeteria for our lunch periods consists of over 50 people, which the Health Commissioner and County Executives do not recommend due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Major school districts are cancelling school across the country such as Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami-Dade school.

The COVID-19 virus has been declared a global pandemic by Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom. The President of the United States Donald Trump has declared a national emergency and Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a State of Emergency.

Education is important for students but students' health is also important. Canceling school for the district will reduce the risk of cases popping up in Western New York. Children with weaker respiratory and immune systems have a lower rate of survival because of the virus, COVID-19.

Why wait for a case to pop up in Erie County when cancelling school can save many students' lives and faculty staff?
